Home fragrance comes in a few different forms: incense sticks or cones, fragrant wood such as palo santo, essential oil warmed over a tealight, a reed diffuser with no flame at all, and candles. Each needs a different holder. This guide matches WENSHUO ceramic burners, holders, diffusers and candles to the fragrance they are made for, with notes on safe use and care.

Incense holders and burners

For incense sticks, choose a holder that catches the falling ash. The Droplet Incense Holder is a 13.3 cm rippled dish with a small hole for the stick in the centre. The Fuko Vertical Incense Holder holds the stick upright in a metal insert over a wide, shallow rim, and the Drip Incense Holder raises the stick on a goblet-shaped stand.

Incense cones and coils burn for longer and give off more smoke. The Le Lion Incense Burner has a domed lid with long openings, so the smoke drifts out while the cone burns inside.

Burning palo santo and fragrant wood

The SEISHIN Incense Burner is a low, mountain-shaped piece with an opening in its side: the wood is lit and laid inside the cavity, and the smoke rises from the peak. The PaloSanto Incense Burner holds a stick across its rippled top.

  1. Hold the tip of the stick in a flame for about 30 seconds, until it catches.
  2. Let it burn for a few seconds, then blow it out so it smoulders and smokes.
  3. Place it in the burner and let it go out on its own.

Oil burners

An oil burner warms a little water scented with essential oil over a tealight. Fill the bowl with water, add a few drops of oil, and light a tealight underneath. Top up the water before it runs dry, and never let the bowl heat while empty.

  • Aura Ceramic Oil Diffuser. A 6 cm cream cylinder with a 37 ml bowl and a domed lid. The tealight glows through the opening in the side.
  • Kusa Warmth Aroma Burner. A three-part set: the burner, a separate diffuser bowl and a small tray for a tealight up to 3.2 cm across.

Essential oil and tealights are not included.

Reed diffusers: fragrance without a flame

For a bedroom, bathroom or anywhere you would rather not leave a flame, a reed diffuser works on its own. The Home Fragrance Set includes a ribbed ceramic diffuser on a dark wooden base, black reeds and a bottle of fragrance oil. Turn the reeds every few days to refresh the scent.

Candles and candle holders

  • Lumière Chubby Candle Cup. A scented candle, Green Gables, poured into a footed ceramic cup with a lid. Place the lid over the cup to put the flame out. Comes in a gift box.
  • Four-Legs Candle Cup. An unscented three-wick candle in a ceramic vessel on four feet, 10.3 cm across.
  • Catcher Incense Cup. A small unscented wax-filled figure; the flame sits in its open head.
  • Shimmer Candle Plate. A ceramic base with a glass shade, for a candle about 4 cm across.

On the first burn, let a candle burn until the melted wax reaches the edge of the vessel, so it does not tunnel. Trim the wick before each use.

Safe use and care

  • Never leave a flame or smouldering incense unattended, and keep it away from curtains, children and pets.
  • Use a heat-resistant surface. Ceramic burners and holders get hot while in use; let them cool before moving them.
  • Ventilate the room a little when burning incense or wood.
  • Cleaning. Once cool, empty the ash or remove any wax, then the ceramic holders and burners can go in the dishwasher.
